Choosing an SEO agency: what to check
Choosing an SEO agency: the short answer
You recognise a good SEO agency by three things: it can show real work and real figures, it says clearly what is in the price and it makes no promises it cannot keep. The rest is detail. A nice website, a large team or a long client list says little about whether the agency can improve your situation.
This article gives you a list to work with. You will not find a top five of agencies here, ours included: we are a party to this, and a list we compile ourselves tells you nothing. What you do get are the checks, the questions and the signals with which you can judge any agency, us included.
First know what you are looking for
You can only compare once you know what you are comparing. Write down what you expect from SEO: more enquiries from your area, more visibility for one service, a new site that can be found. Note too what you can supply yourself, such as photos, customer reviews and knowledge of your trade. That decides how much work an agency has to do, and so what it costs.
Seven checks before you sign
1. Does the agency show real results?
Ask for client examples, with a date and the search query attached. A position without a query, a location and a date says nothing: Google does not show everyone the same results. An honest agency says itself that positions vary by location and moment and that an example is not a promise. Check that the client really exists and that you can open the site yourself. A screenshot of a graph is not proof.
You can find examples on our case studies overview. The Slotenmaker AMG case study shows search results from 26 May 2026, captured from Belgium. Judge them the way you judge any case study: as an example, not as a guarantee.
2. Who does the work?
Are you talking to the salesperson, the strategist or the person who edits your site? Ask who writes the pages, who fixes the technical errors and who picks up the phone. If the work is passed on to another company, you would rather hear that beforehand.
3. What is in the monthly fee?
Ask for a list, not for words. Are there new pages, technical monitoring, internal links, reporting? How many hours or which deliverables per month? A figure without content cannot be compared. Ask also which part goes to the one-off foundation and which to ongoing work. What those parts cost is covered in How much does SEO cost in Belgium?.
4. How long is the contract and how do you cancel?
A minimum term of a few months is normal. SEO needs time, and a trial month says little. Multi-year commitments, automatic renewals or high costs on cancellation are not normal. Read the notice period before you sign.
5. How do they report?
A good report says what was done, what changed and what the next step is. A report that only shows a graph of positions does not tell you whether the work pays off. Positions are not the goal either: enquiries, phone calls and quote requests are. Ask which figures the agency reports and whether you can look along in Google Search Console yourself.
6. Who stays the owner?
Your website, your domain name, your copy and your Google accounts should be yours. Ask what happens if you stop: do you get access and the files without a fight? An agency that does not answer this clearly holds on to you with something other than results.
7. Does it look at your site first?
A serious quote starts with a look at your current situation. A fixed price before anyone has looked at your site is a price for a standard product, not for your problem. An SEO audit is a good way to do that.
Warning signs
- A guaranteed first place. Nobody outside Google decides the search results. Anyone promising a guaranteed position promises something outside their control.
- Buying links. Hundreds of paid links look like quick results, but Google treats bought links as a breach of its guidelines. It can harm your site more than help.
- Fake reviews. Reviews you have written or bought damage you in the long run. The agency should help you get real reviews from real customers.
- Reports with only positions. See check 5.
- No access to your own accounts. See check 6.
- Pressure to sign quickly. An offer that expires tomorrow is a sales method, not an SEO argument.
- No questions about your business. An agency that does not ask who your customers are and what you want to achieve cannot work for you either.
Questions for an intake call
Take this list with you. A good agency answers without excuses.
- Can you show me a recent client, with the search query and the date?
- Who does the work, and how often do we speak?
- What exactly is in the price, per month and one-off?
- Which figures do you report, and what do you do when nothing changes?
- What is the minimum term, and how do I cancel?
- What happens to my site, copy and accounts if I stop?
- Which tasks do you not do, and what do I have to do myself?
- What would you do first in my situation, and why?
Local SEO is a different game
For a plumber, barber or locksmith, SEO is mostly about being visible in your own area: your Google Business Profile, clear service pages, consistent details and real reviews. An agency that mostly talks about national keywords and big names may not understand your question. So ask whether the agency works locally and have it explain how it approaches the map results. What that means in practice is in our guide to local SEO in Flanders.
What price should you expect?
An honest figure does not exist without knowing your situation. Your price depends on your starting point, the competition in your area, how much content is needed and how much you supply yourself. We do not repeat it here: the full explanation is in How much does SEO cost in Belgium?. Be wary of a price far below all the others, or one that explains nothing about what it includes.
How we work
A short, factual account, so you can hold us to the same list. We work with two SEO options: the Local SEO Starter Package, €250 one-time, with service pages, metadata, Google Business Profile, schema and internal links, and SEO Growth Support, €500 per month, with content, internal links, technical SEO and reporting, for at least three months. Want to know first where your site stands? Then we do a free manual SEO audit. More about our approach is on the SEO optimisation page. We do not promise positions.
The next step
Ask at least two agencies for a quote, and lay them side by side using the seven checks above. Questions about what fits your situation? Get in touch.
